Knight's move from Fostex
In the minds of many music lovers, the Japanese manufacturer Fostex is associated with sophisticated planar magnetic headphones, which stand out for their reasonable cost and analytical sound that is not the most pleasant for the ear. But at NAMM 2017, brand representatives made a big move and presented the public with inexpensive universal headphones TH7, which used dynamic drivers, and a well-known design suddenly modernized and became brighter.
U - universalism
The main thing that captivates in TH7 is their versatility. For example, one review will praise their honest, monitor sound for a reasonable price. In another, the author will admire their unpretentiousness, they say they sound cool even with a mediocre smartphone. In some places they are even advised as DJ headphones, although this is already completely debatable. We don't know how they did it, but according to test listenings, there was a strong feeling that they kept the flat frequency response of planar models and enriched it with the energy of dynamic drivers. They are especially good at modern pop music, hip-hop and EDM: despite the closed design, the bass is clearly defined, the mids are well detailed, and the tops sound loud and perky. There is a slight hump around 13,000 Hz, but it shows up mostly on records with a lot of hissing and hissing sounds like old jazz tunes from the 60s. In general, we liked the TH-7 much more than the planar T20RPmkIII, from the honesty of which the ears folded into a tube.
Colours for every taste
Often manufacturers try to attract attention with extremely advanced functionality, Fostex TH7 are the complete opposite of the idea of "everything and more." They have an extremely simple design and are decorated without unnecessary pretentiousness, but at the same time they perfectly cope with their main purpose of playing music at the level of much more expensive models. Oh yes, one of the interesting features was the release in four different colours at once. Working with young people in mind is not common among professional audio brands, but it looks like Fostex has made it into the top 10.
